Proclaim and Praise: A Lenten Journey for Abiding in Christ

A Donkey?!
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt, and
put Jesus on it.
Luke 19:35

nlike other noble animals such as lions and eagles,
donkeys have never gotten much respect. In fact,
some things about donkeys make people laugh4they
are stubborn, recalcitrant, and slow. Lions demand respect.
Dogs receive affection from their owners. Dolphins are viewed
with a kind of curiosity. Eagles are held up as the emblem of
the nation, but not a donkey. They don9t get much respect.
Who wants to be identified with a donkey? Interestingly, the
Lord of creation could have selected any animal to bear him
on His kingly ride through Jerusalem, yet He asked for a
donkey. Why didn9t He enter on the back of a white steed
prancing majestically down the street? That would have
made for a grander entrance.
Perhaps Jesus used a donkey because it9s the most
unlikely, unusable animal that you would ride down the middle
of Main Street leading a parade. It was the Lord9s way of
saying,
